Skokie Public Library is pleased to offer free wireless Internet access ("WiFi") to patrons with wireless-enabled devices, including laptop computers, tablet PCs, and PDAs.

How safe is the wireless Internet?

The Internet is a public communications network. This means that unauthorized persons may be able to monitor your Internet activity. Be aware that information sent to or from your laptop can be intercepted by anyone else with a wireless device and the appropriate software. Transmitting any personal information such as passwords, credit card, or Social Security numbers while using any wireless "hotspot," including SkokieLibrary, is not recommended. If you choose to send personal information, remember that your information is not protected unless you are connected to a website that encrypts data using Secure Socket Layering (SSL).

Can I download large files?

Please be courteous when using our shared network resources. Extensive downloading will cause traffic to slow, affecting all of the Library's wireless users. Please avoid running streaming audio/video files and downloading music. Abuse of the wireless network could result in a reduction of bandwidth for all users.

I don't have a wireless network card. Can I plug in to the Library's physical connection?

Due to network security issues, the Library does not provide plug-in access to our network. If your laptop is not set up for wireless access, you may use the Library’s Internet-accessible desktops or wireless laptops.

Is technical support available from Library staff?

Library staff is unable to assist with setting up wireless Internet access on your computer; you are responsible for setting up your own equipment.

What settings do I use to connect to the wireless network?

Your computer should automatically detect the SSID. If you are using an older operating system, the settings may need to be configured manually. Consult your computer’s manual for using the wireless setup utility. You will need to use the following settings:

  • SSID: skokielibrary
  • WEP: disabled
  • IP: DHCP enabled

How do I register my computer on the wireless network?

Skokie Public Library currently uses an open wireless network. Connecting to the network assumes you will adhere to the Library's Acceptable Use Policy.

I'm connected to "SkokieLibrary" but I can't log on to the Internet

Be sure that your DHCP settings are configured to obtain all IP and DNS addresses automatically. If you open your browser and are unable to connect, simply open a different website or refresh the page. Forcing a new connection should create a new working connection.

Can I print from my laptop?

Wireless printing is available over the Library's wireless network. You may also save your file to a portable storage device (CD-ROM, USB drive) and print from one of the Library's desktop computers. You will need to add money to your Library card or buy a copy card in order to print. Wireless printing services can be accessed via the Internet at http://printwifi.skokielibrary.info. Currently, only black and white documents can be printed wirelessly.

Can I print from my mobile device?

To print an email message or attachment from a mobile device, forward your email to skokie-adultservices@printspots.com for the printer in the 2nd floor Computer Lab or skokie-readerservices@printspots.com for the printer on the 1st floor by the Readers' Services desk. You will be sent a confirmation email for each message and attachment. Enter your email address at the print station to retrieve your print job. You will need to add money to your Library card or buy a copy card from the 2nd floor Copy Center in order to print.

  • Due to liability issues, Library staff is not able to assist patrons with their laptop, network card, or configuration. Patrons are solely responsible for the handling, modification, and troubleshooting of their equipment.
  • The Library assumes no responsibility for damage, theft, or loss of any kind to a patron's equipment, software, or data files.
  • Inappropriate use of the Library's network includes:
    • Conducting illegal activity, accessing illegal materials, or exhibiting materials which are considered obscene by local community standards
    • Copyright infringement
    • Violating another user's privacy
    • Violating network security
