Services for Individuals
Library staff provide assistance to patrons using Library resources for job searching and career strategies. Other services include:
- Individual orientation to the Employment Resource Center
- Assistance using the Internet for your job and career information search
- Referrals to agencies, associations, and organizations
- A bulletin board with job listings and program notices
- Career seminars in the Library led by professional consultants and counselors
- Lists of Library holdings on entrepreneurship and careers
- Lists of Internet resources of interest to job seekers and career changers, including a list of Major Employers of Skokie.

Career Counselors at the Library
If you are uncertain about what career path to follow, if you need some help polishing a resume, or if you just need someone to talk with about your job situation, then a career counselor may be able to help. Experienced career counselors are available to meet with jobseekers at Skokie Public Library on an appointment basis. There is no charge for this service. Skokie Career Support Group
For an opportunity to network and share career search tools and strategies with other job searchers, join us at the Skokie Career Support Group. The group meets at Skokie Public Library on the third Monday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00am, and is moderated by Maxine Topper, a licensed career counselor from Jewish Vocational Service. Materials and Resources in the Library
Books and materials on careers, employment, vocational education, and businesses are located near the Information Services desk. These resources are available for use in the Library or for checkout and include:
- Books on resume writing, interviewing, job search strategies, and small business management
- Directories for companies, consultants, non-profit organizations, associations, executive recruiters, advertising agencies, and more
- Online business directories such as ReferenceUSA and Hoover's Online, providing lists of companies to target in your job search
- Online periodical indexes such as Factiva, Business ASAP, and the Chicago Tribune in which you can research prospective companies and industries
- Internet access and classes to learn to use and search the Internet, and lists of Internet sites that might be of interest
- PCs with word processing software to write and print resumes and cover letters
- Tutorials to learn how to use the latest software packages
- Videotapes and audiocassettes on job search and career enhancement topics
