  • The Calculating Stars

    2018 by Kowal, Mary Robinette

In 1952, a meteorite strikes the Eastern seaboard obliterating entire cities and accelerating the space race. This retro science fiction story has an explosive beginning, fully-realized characters, and a sequel, The Fated Sky, to keep you interested in the space endeavors of "the lady scientists." An extra star to the audio book, beautifully narrated by the author. Recommended by Megan.

  • The Lost Plot

    2018 by Cogman, Genevieve

This is the latest in the Invisible Library series, with plenty of action, witty dialogue, and intriguing details about draconic aristocracy. I cannot resist anything that involves librarians, time travel, and dragons; call it my ideal fantasy-reading scenario. Recommended by Sharon.

  • Beneath the Sugar Sky

    2018 by McGuire, Seanan

This the third book in the Wayward Children series, which explores the experiences of children and teens who have managed to travel to a myriad of worlds outside of our own, much like Alice's Wonderland. The whole series is imaginative and has a very diverse and interesting cast of characters. Recommended by Katy.

  • Grey Sister

    2018 by Lawrence, Mark

In book two of the Ancestor series, Lawrence once again combines great world building and dynamic characters to craft an exciting, gritty fantasy novel. I loved Nona and find her unique in the crowded field of young heroes tasked with saving the world. I'm excited for the conclusion of the series, Holy Sister. Recommended by Lynnanne.

  • Spinning Silver

    2018 by Novik, Naomi

I am a big fan of all of Novik’s books, from her dragon Temeraire series to her previous stand-alone novel Uprooted. This multi-layered story plunges the reader into a deep re-imagining of Rumpelstiltskin. I found it nothing less than spellbinding, with lots of admiration for the strong female characters. Recommended by Sharon.

  • Children of Blood and Bone

    2018 by Adeyemi, Tomi

Some of the best world building I have come across! Adeyemi portrays a vibrant world full of magic. I am already deeply invested in many characters, and this is only from the first book! Recommended by Dan.
