Illinois became a state in 1818, but even by the beginning of the 1830s, Chicago, as the largest non-Indian settlement, only had about 150 inhabitants. Learn about the beginnings of Niles Township, the first settlers in the area and their relationship to the Native Americans, and how this place would eventually become Skokie -- with a new Village seal and a new Village flag!
