A League of Their Own
“There’s no crying in baseball!” Directed by Penny Marshall, this sports dramedy is a fictionalized story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. It’s set in 1943, and focuses on The Rockford Peaches, an all-girl baseball team from Rockford, IL.
They are a disparate group, with varying talents, and their manager Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is cynical and abrasive--at first. However, the women are determined to make something of the team, to step out of stereotypical and traditional roles. Their enthusiasm has a positive effect on their manager. He becomes the manager that the team needs, and they, win or lose, know much was accomplished.
Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell, Lori Petty, and Madonna.
