Rental Family
Phillip, an American actor living in Tokyo for the past seven years, finds it increasingly hard to land work. He ends up taking a job with a small business called Rental Family, which specializes in providing actors to play roles of fake family members, friends, and other temporary personas. While initially reluctant to deceive people, Phillip soon realizes he can help others deal with complex personal issues. Although advised to maintain emotional boundaries, Phillip starts to care deeply for his clients, which leads to complications and forces a reevaluation of his motivations.
Based on the real-life rental industry in Japan, written and directed by Hikari, the film sensitively examines such themes as loneliness, the need for human connection, and moral implications of paid relationships.
