We will discuss The Little Sparrow Murders by Seishi Yokomizo.
"There is a great deal of wickedness in village life." Agatha Christie may have had Jane Marple’s own St. Mary Mead in mind when she wrote that line, but she could just as easily have been talking about Onikobe, Japan.
Amateur sleuth Kosuke Kindaichi’s plans to sojourn in the mountain town and maybe look into a decades-old mystery are upended by a series of murders that appear inspired by an eerie children’s song. That and a seemingly spectral presence make this classic novel by Seishi Yokomizo--one of the all-time masters of honkaku (the Japanese equivalent of the English "fair play" detective story)--a fine pick for an October night.
