This month we'll be discussing The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution by Eric Foner.
It would be hard for a person contemplating the United States of 1865 not to conclude that the system the Founders had bequeathed the nation just under a century earlier had been catastrophically flawed. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Eric Foner lays out the ways the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments–all passed in just five years–represented an attempt to fix those flaws. They abolished slavery, codified the principles of birthright citizenship and legal equality, and guaranteed the right of Black men to vote. We live in the America the “Reconstruction Amendments” made, but we’ve been fighting about those amendments ever since.
